Read full description of the books:

This was an interesting take on the dark side of inner-city living. Socrates "Socko" Starr lives with his mom in the projects, and things have pretty much been taken over be the Tarantulas, a local gang. Socko's mother would do anything to get him out of the neighborhood and away from the possibility of trouble. That chance comes along when she hears from her own grandfather, who is hoping to avoid moving into a nursing home by buying a new house and having them care for him. The agreement includes leaving them the house when he passes away.

Things don't turn out to be quite so rosy when they move in. First off, the General, as they refer to Socko's great grandfather is pretty cranky all of the time. Secondly, they seem to be the only family living in the neighborhood, which is still under construction. With his mother off to work everyday at her fast food job in the old neighborhood, Socko is stuck home alone with the General every day during his summer vacation.

The prospect starts to look up as he explores the construction sites of his plat. Then, he meets Livvy Holmes, whose family moves in across the street. It turns out that her family is the family that is building the homes, and things are not going well. Livvy and Socko become pretty friendly and start to learn more about where they are on the social scale since she is from a wealthy family.

As with so many people, the bad economy creeps in. The Holmes family is having trouble completing the building project, and their partners are considering pulling. This would mean economic disaster for them. Can Socko and his quickly growing family help out? What about the old neighborhood ... has Socko and his family truly escape the dangers from the projects?

While this wasn't the quickest paced book I have read, I found myself not being able to put the book down. I was drawn to the General, Livvy, Socko, and his mom. They are pretty well-developed characters, and I truly wanted to see what was going to happen to them as they faced the troubles that are not uncommon in today's tough economy. It was a pretty good look at how the troubles of the inner city can be a major challenge, but not impossible to overcome.

The ending takes on a bit of an exaggeration as the book races to an intense conclusion, but it is one that is quite interesting, even if it feels a little rushed. With that said, I really liked the book as a whole.

Reviews of the Summer On The Moon

FINLEY

This is a very predictable author. When you get a book for free, you can read it. The intrigue is present, the unbundling is clear.
